UP Rondalla returns to Hawai‘i for musical tour celebrating Filipino American History Month

HONOLULU, HI — The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Hawaii (UPAAH), in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, proudly presents “Harmonies Across the Pacific: UP Rondalla Musical Tour in Hawai‘i” to celebrate Filipino American History Month this October. A weeklong cultural and educational tour includes a series of free public performances, workshops, and community events.

The UP Rondalla, renowned for its mastery of traditional Filipino string instruments such as the bandurria, laud, octavina, guitar, and double bass, has earned international acclaim for blending folk traditions with contemporary works. Their performances bring to life the rich tapestry of Philippine musical heritage, captivating audiences across the globe.

Highlights of the Hawai‘i tour include:

  • October 10 – UP Rondalla Concert, UH Mānoa Orvis Auditorium, from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • October 11 – Performance at Ala Moana Center Stage, 3 p.m.
  • October 12 – Rondalla Workshop, UH Mānoa Music Department, Room 36, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
  • October 13 – Rondalla Lecture and Recital, celebrating the 50th anniversary of and hosted by the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Center for Philippine Studies and East-West Center at Hale Halawai from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

UP Rondalla is also performing at FilCom Center’s Bayanihan Gala on Oct. 11 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Tapa Ballroom, 5:30 p.m. Learn more at filcom.org.

The UP Rondalla last performed in Hawai‘i in 2019, delighting audiences with daily performances, workshops, and media appearances. Their return in 2025 continues a tradition of cultural exchange between the Philippines and Hawai‘i.
