    Dr. Raymund L. Liongson

Raymund Llanes Liongson, Ph.D., is more than an educator; he is a community leader, cultural champion, and relentless advocate for

justice and empowerment. A professor in the Arts and Humanities at

the University of Hawaii-Leeward for over two decades, Dr. Liongson’s passion for education extends far beyond the classroom. For him, teaching is not simply about imparting knowledge but igniting transformation—a mission he embraces with unwavering dedication.

A Legacy of Education and Advocacy

An educator for over 40 years, Dr. Liongson has garnered numerous accolades, including the Wo Learning Champion, Sharon Narimatsu Award, and the Hawaii Plantation Legacy Award. In 2019, he was also

an Honoree at FilCom Center’s Bayanihan Gala. Beyond awards, his real impact is measured by the lives he has touched. His work with grants has secured millions of dollars to support students of Filipino and Hawaiian ancestry, while his innovative programs have inspired countless young people to strive for higher education and community engagement.

“Ka Ray” – A Life of Courage and Commitment

Lovingly called "Ka Ray" by friends, Dr. Liongson is the epitome of courage and selflessness. Known as a "yes" man in the best possible sense, he never hesitates to step forward when there is an opportunity

to help others or elevate the Filipino community. This resolve was on full display recently during his arrest as part of the “Kapiolani 10,” a protest supporting nurses locked out for standing against unfair practices. His powerful statement—“It had to happen and it is a small price to pay to redeem justice, preserve life, and make a public statement of support for our nurses”—encapsulates his bravery and unshakable sense of justice. His actions were instrumental in ending a 40-day strike, securing a groundbreaking contract for the nurses.

A Cultural Advocate and Visionary Artist

Raymund’s love for storytelling and history found its pinnacle in “Kired,” and “Kasarinlan,” two stage plays he wrote and directed about the stories and struggles of Sakadas, our first Filipino plantation workers in Hawaii, and the Filipino struggle for Philippine independence. The production not only brought history to life but also fostered unity among Filipino organizations. His artistic endeavors are a testament to his belief in the power of culture to inspire and educate.

A Humble Leader and Tireless Worker

Dr. Liongson’s leadership is as far-reaching as it is impactful. He currently serves as a member for the Hawaii Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and is a former Commissioner of the Hawaii State Civil Rights Commission. Since 2010, he has been the Commander of the Knights of Rizal (Hawaii), where he continues to uphold and promote the ideals of Dr. José Rizal. Following the Lahaina wildfires, he also organized and directed the FilCom Center Bayanihan for Maui Benefit Concert for Filipino survivors.

As Worshipful Master of the Hawaiian Lodge, Dr. Liongson exemplifies dedication and fraternity, while his editorial work, including co-editing four Rizalian books with Dr. Serafin P. Colmenares, Jr., showcases his commitment to preserving and promoting Filipino heritage. Whether sweeping floors at the FilCom Center or organizing youth conferences, he approaches every task with humility and a servant’s heart.

A Friend, Family Man, and Role Model

To his friends, Raymund is loyal, reliable, and deeply committed. He carries himself with pride and honor, embodying the values he tirelessly champions. Above all, he is a devoted family man whose love and support extend to his community like ripples in a pond, touching everyone he encounters.

Raymund is the quintessential example of what alumni of the University of the Philippines should embody—upholding the school's motto of honor and excellence. He amplifies the voices of the voiceless, confronts oppression, and champions justice—all with grace, intelligence, dignity, and an unyielding love for the Filipino people.

His unwavering dedication, courage, and compassion leave an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.

We hope you all can join us for an evening of inspiration, as we celebrate Ka Ray’s lifetime achievements, and friendship.

The Hawaii State Department of Education has recruited teachers from the Philippines on a J-1 VISA to fill the gap in the teachers' workforce in Hawaii. The teachers will be stationed across the islands of Hawaii.

UPAAH was there at the welcome reception at Farrington High School and provided supplies. Mahalo to UPAAH members who donated to this cause!
